Abstract:

The interaction between the omega phase and deformation twinning in body centered cubic Ti-V alloys is examined. 112 111 deformation twinning is observed to occur in both ductile and embrittled alloys over the range of solute contents and thermal treatments which produce omega. Correlation of the occurrence of twinning with the omega particle size, misfit, and volume fractions examined, suggest only the presence of omega is necessary for twin nucleartion during deformation. A potentially reversible twinning mechanism involving the stress-assisted, reversible transformation is discussed. Author
