Abstract:

Using the results of the 1972 nation-wide study, this report considers the willingness of Americans to volunteer for civil defense activities should their services be desired or needed. The report considers regional, city-size, demographic and attitudinal variability in propensities to volunteer. Among the salient clusters of attitudes, attention is paid to attitudes toward foreign policy of the United States, toward arms control and disarmament options, and toward civil defense both in general and in terms of specific alternatives. The data support the conclusion that, should volunteers be needed, there would be little or no difficulty in mobilizing large numbers of Americans to contribute some of their energy and time for civil defense related efforts.
