This report describes some of the current problems in interpreting the output of cardiac care monitors, which make it difficult to detect changes in patient condition or determine the medical significance of certain changes in heart rhythm. An analog circuit was assembled which measures several characteristics of the heart rhythm and plots them at a slow speed on a strip chart. The system resists artifacts and can present most of the information in twenty-four hours of monitoring on a page of output. The graphical output makes long-term fluctuations visible, and may allow warning signs of ventricular fibrillation to be identified. Author
