Abstract:
The authors have found evidence that the nuclear total energy system is technically feasible and capable of economically serving the utility needs of military installations. The recovery of thermal energy from a direct-cycle high-temperature gas-cooled reactor would result in significant reductions in thermal emissions and air pollution and aid in the conservation of fossil-fuel resources. Provision of electricity and thermal energy from a nuclear energy center should be considered for total energy systems in appropriately sized urban communities. This concept will accrue the greatest benefits in areas where air quality degradation is to be kept to a minimum and where dependable fuel supply must be guaranteed.
