Abstract:

A method of three dimensional boundary collocation has been presented in the paper. The method gives satisfactory results for a penny shaped crack in a block in comparison with the exact solution of the crack in an infinite medium. In the application of this method to a part-circular surface crack in a block, the condition of vanishing normal stress at points of crack-free surface intersection gives significant lower stress intensity factors by the present method than previously reported results at points close to the free surface. At points where the effect of free surface is small, the results obtained by collocation method are in good agreement with results by other methods. Using a simple simulation stress intensity factors for a circular surface flaw in a thick walled cylinder were obtained which are in excellent agreement with extensive experimental results.
