Abstract:

Studies are in progress at the United States Army Institute of Dental Research to assess the potential usefulness of general electroanesthesia in Army dentistry and medicine. Electronic circuitry as well as all required accessories have been designed, constructed and evaluated within this Institute. Conventional dental restorative, endodontic, and surgical procedures have been performed on rhesus macaque monkeys using a modulated high frequency electrical current to achieve an anesthetic state. Blood pressure, pulse rate and respiration of the test subjects remained within normal limits. Recovery of the animals on completion of the operative procedures occurred rapidly.
