The effort has consisted of a coupled analytical and experimental approach. The experimental program has included the construction of a high- velocity powder gun capable of achieving impact velocities up to 0.274 cm microsecond 9000 ftsec for nominal 3-g fragments, and penetration tests of fragment-simulating projectiles into controlled soil targets. There has been considerable experimental study in the low impact velocity range OA for penetration into soils, for which an increasing penetration depth with increasing impact velocity is observed.
