The effect of masking angle, multipathing, foliage penetration and signal strength on the determination of GPS - Army User Equipment locations was determined. A computer program to simulate the scenario functions was written and was used to perturb range measurements from 10 user locations to six GPS satellites initial deployment configuration. Tracking times of 20 minutes, 2 hours, and 7 hours were investigated to determine the affect of the solution of a users position. Various magnitudes of the scenario functions were also considered. The results indicate that GPS user equipment operating in a typical Army environment will not be able to recover the users position to better than 3 meters even if the only source of error was due to the scenario functions. The magnitude of the error due to scenario functions produces almost a one-to-one error in the determination of the users location. Author
