The report evaluates the Si3N4 system with emphasis on attempting to protect the Ta wires from oxidation by using a siliciding treatment prior to hot pressing, a Weibull analysis of RT strength of Si3N4-Ta composites, the thermal fatigue testing of Si3N4 and Si3N4-Ta wedge shaped samples between a furnace at 1300C and a cold 40C fluidized bed, and an attempt to identify the grain boundary phases present in two different Si3N4 15 wt Y2O3 materials. In addition, elevated temperature MOR and creep studies were done on Si3N4 15 Y2O3 Ta composite samples.
