This report covers the results of an advisory contract with directions to assist the Laser Measurement Technology Group of the US Army Missile Command Redstone Arsenal, Alabama in an initial evaluation of the potential applicability of optical pattern recognition to target identification and terminal homing systems. The initial part of the report is a tutorial survey of optical pattern recognition which includes a selected bibliography that reflects the present state of the art. Sections 1 and 2 discuss two potential applications. Preliminary calculations indicate that it is energetically practical to use optical pattern recognition techniques for target recognition over a range of five kilometers. Less detailed calculations on another possible applications indicate that detection of either intensity distributions or intensity gradients can be used for target recognition however, electronic techniques are probably preferable to optical processing techniques.
