The dynamic characteristics of fuel tanks which are penetrated by .50 caliber bullets are examined using a 2-D finite difference computer code. The bullet impacts the tank unyawed however, tumbling is simulated by changing the shape of the bullet in the calculation to match the drag force and associated energy transferred between a real tumbling bullet and the fuel. Complete penetration of a 15 in. deep fuel tank with 18 in. aluminum walls is analyzed in the numerical calculation. The calculation includes a description of the Pressure versus time and radius loads on the entrance and exit walls, Pressure-time histories at various stations in the fuel, Deformation of the entrance and exit walls, and Formation of the cavity in the fuel behind the penetrating bullet.
