Experiments were conducted to determine appropriate compositions for glasses for the fabrication of acoustic transducers. Glasses made by conventional melting did not demonstrate sufficiently high silica content to allow development of the electret effect. Glasses made by the vycor process and doped with a variety of conducting materials were used. This approach provides glasses with sufficiently high silica content to allow for permanent polarization and use as electrets.
