Abstract:

An air-cushion supported vehicle and the surface effect ship-type operating on the interface of two media air and water is a multi-parameter system influenced by the hydrodynamics of the fluid medium as well as by the aerodynamics of the air chamber which is under continuous supply of air through a system of fans and exhaust leakage through the peripheral gap. The study concerns the hydrodynamic aspect of the problem where the presence of the vehicle is simulated by a pressure patch of oscillatory nature and constant amplitude moving uniformly at the free surface of a three-dimensional space. The approach is very general, applicable to arbitrary Froude numbers and reduced frequencies and can be extended to the case of a spatially variable pressure patch.
