There have been significant advances in calculators in recent years. One model, the Hewlett-Packard 9830A, has a hardwired BASIC interpreter, a memory size of 7904 16-bit words, a capability of serving as a terminal, and a number of useful peripherals. This material provides some documentation on two 9830 programs written at the Naval Research Laboratory. These programs deal with a the determination of a ships position from certain combinations of range andpr bearings from given stations and b the smoothed track histories of maneuvering targets and the prediction of future positions based on these tracks. The programs are illustrative of the complexity of programs that can be performed in the HP 9830A without memory overlays. The documentation includes some explanatory examples, equation development and complete program listings.
