The impact of the energy crisis is examined in terms of the economic aspects of the crisis, effects on Americas allies and alliances, effect on the Communist Bloc, and effect on US warfighting capability. The crisis has a serious impact on national security, particularly on the US economic base and the USs alliances. NATO, especially, has had serious strains as a result of the crisis. In a war with Russia, the US could be a severe disadvantage because of the relative ease with which its energy lifelines can be interdicted. The US Armed Forces should develope tactics for coping with an energy shortage environment. These include development of smaller, faster tankers to reduce their vulnerability to submarine attack and the direction of research toward ways in which petroleum-using equipment could be converted to use other energy sources andor significantly less petroleum.
