A Finite Element Analysis of the Effects of Biaxial Loading on Fracture,

A finite element analysis combining with series-type analytic solution around the crack tip has been carried out with the purpose to study the biaxial effects of a center-cracked specimen. The method adopted makes it possible to show not only numerically, but also analytically that the uniform biaxial loading does not affect the stress intensity factor, but it does affect the energy release rate and the path of maximum sigma sub theta theta. The effects of geometric parameters and boundary conditions are also shown.
