Abstract:

When a highly intense light pulse propagates through a medium, the electric field of the pulse can alter the index of refraction, which in turn, affects the propagation of the pulse. The time dependent index changes the phase of the wave which changes the temporal and spectral characteristics as well. The spectral broadening which occurs is called self-phase modulation or super broadening. There are a number of mechanisms which can contribute to the index variation 1 direct electronic cloud distortion, 2 molecular reorientation, 3 molecular redistribution, and 4 librational motion of molecules. In the report self-phase modulation SPM is reviewed. A brief background is given and the process is described from a theoretical and experimental point of view.
