Fatigue Testing of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics.

Unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic CFRP has been tested in fatigue using waisted and rectangular specimens. Comparisons have also been made between notched, waisted and plain rectangular test-pieces using material oriented at 0 plus or minus 45 degrees. It is concluded that, when testing CFRP to obtain basic materials property data, a plain rectangular specimen is the most suitable. Three types of fiber, high modulus type 1, medium modulus type 2 and low modulus type 3 have been compared for their fatigue performance in laminates and it has been found that the higher the fiber modulus the smaller the influence of dynamic loadings. Intralaminar shear tests, using plus or minus 45 degree specimens tested in tension, show creep is induced by fatigue loadings and that CFRP of this orientation is sensitive to cyclic shear stresses.
