Laboratory and field studies were conducted at the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant VAAP to determine the effects of munitions wastes on aquatic life in the receiving system Waconda Bay, Chickamauga Lake. In addition to laboratory and field determinations of selected chemical and physical parameters the following aquatic groups were investigated Bacteria, protozoa, phytoplankton, periphyton, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates and fish. Of the physicalchemical in-situ parameters examined, DO, pH, and conductivity were apparently influenced by plant activities. Zooplankton numerical abundance was reduced in upper Waconda Bay. Benthic macroinvertebrate diversity was reduced in upper Waconda Bay. The biological sampling indicates that the macroinvertebrate community recovered or nearly recovered within the confines of Waconda Bay.
