Abstract:

The paper explores the question of how one determines whether or not a frozen lake, frozen river or frozen sea surface will support military vehicle operations. The bulk of the paper describes the uniqueness of ice as a structural material and highlights basic differences between fresh water ans sea water ice. Data was gathered from highly technical papers concerned with determining the bearing capacity of floating ice plates. The paper cites an analytical method requiring further study which could be used for solving load bearing problems related to the movement of vehicles and personnel across frozen water surfaces. In conclusion, the paper points out that many problems, particularly the long term storage of equipment on ice, are yet to be solved in an adequate fashion. Author
