This contract concerned obtaining as complete a description as possible of the formation of diffused lithium niobate-tantalate waveguides and determining the optimum processing and conditions for them. In the final portion of the work, the goals were 1 to complete the analytic study of the waveguides begun earlier, 2 to study the factors contributing to waveguide losses and determine the limits within which low-loss waveguides can be fabricated, and 3 to study the formation and optical characteristics of stripe guides.
