Abstract:

The Beginners All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code BASIC is an algebaric problem oriented programming language. BASIC allows the programmer to write his program largely in common mathematical notations using the simple statements of the language. BASIC is intended for interactive use such as is found on a terminal oriented time-sharing system. This report contains a description of a tool designed and implemented to be used in collecting and analyzing data that will assist in identifying the manner in which the programming language BASIC is used by programmers in writing programs. The initial design and implementation of the tool to provide statistics concerning the BASIC language is described. An explanation is given of the types of data collected and the method in which the data was collected. Explanations of current analysis methods, sources of data and results are provided along with possible conclusions that may be drawn from the results.
