Abstract:

Hospitals analyze millions of blood and urine specimen annually. The Veterans Administration VA Hospitals make extensive use of Technicon Sequential Multiple Analyzer SMA units for blood and urine analysis. The SMA 1260 and SMA 660 units can perform twelve and six different tests per minute, respectively, on a specimen. A systems design to automate most of the information transfers required with the SMA system operation was begun in mid-1975. This report is a continuation and update of this systems design. A prototype analysis system has been implemented around an Intel 8Mod 80 microprocessor. The system analyzes SMA 1260 results, calibrates the test results via software, and provides an output document containing test results annotated with remarks for any out-of-specification conditions.
