Phase equilibrium was studied in the system Si3N4-AlN-Al2O3-SiO2. A broad two phase field of liquids in equilibrium with Beta SiA1ON solid solutions was found to exist at temperatures above about 1750 C. Initial studies were undertaken to exploit this two phase field to effect a homogeneous transient liquid phase sintering of Beta compositions. Author
