Abstract:

The literature was searched to find algorithmic techniques for resource allocation to maximize reliability or to minimize cost in terms of volume, weight, dollars, etc. for a minimum level of reliability. One has to conclude that only the simplest of models have been investigated. Most papers deal with the simple series-parallel circuit with a single input and a single output. It appears as though multiple goal programming may be a useful technique. The biggest need seems to be a nonenumerative method for calculating the reliability of a multicomponent system.
