The purpose of this study is to investigate one facet of the Marine disaster the process of abandoning ship. Three hundred and twenty five commercial vessel accidents were investigated in two separate groups small uninspected vessels under 500 gross tons and large inspected vessels greater than 500 gross tons. Three methods of abandonment, use of group lifesaving equipment GSE, transfer and going overboard, were studied and statistical results displayed. The performance of GSE lifeboats and liferafts was of special interest. Availability of effectiveness of GSE was determined for the sample population which covered accidents during fiscal years 1971-1973 small vessels and 1950-1973 large vessels. GSE problem areas during the launch and transit phases are itemized. Author
