The detection of electromagnetic energy with glow discharge detectors gdds is analyzed in terms of an indirect enhanced ionization model based on the statistical theory of ionized gases. Theoretical predictions agree very well with experimental observations of responsivity and detectivity in the microwave, millimeter, and visible bands and provide valuable design criteria for the optimization of gdd performance in terms of gas composition, pressure and discharge current over an extremely wide spectral band ranging from the lower microwave to the visible.
