Three Dimensional Shock Waves and Their Behavior in Elastic Fluids.

In this paper, the properties of three-dimensional shock waves are considered. First, the kinematical aspects of shock and, the implications of balance of mass and balance of linear momentum are reviewed, then, the behavior of shock waves propagating in elastic fluids are examined. After deriving the expression for the shock speed, growth and decay behavior of the shock amplitude is considered. In particular, it is shown that the time rate of change of the shock amplitude depends on the wave form immediately behind the front and the mean curvature of the wave surface as well as the shock strength itself. Finally, compatibility conditions are derived that must be satisfied by the variation of the amplitude in the shock surface and the wave form behind the shock. These conditions are shown to imply that particle paths beyond the shock will be curved in the direction of decreasing amplitude. Author
