Conductive Wall Effects on the Hose Instability.

Laboratory experiments on the hose instability are usually performed in a tank with metal walls. The effect of the conducting walls on the growth rate of the hose instability is considered in this report. The fact that fields must satisfy discontinuity relations at the wall greatly complicates the calculation of the appropriate boundary condition parameters. This problem is considered in the appendices of this report. The results are considerably more tractable in the limit of high-plasma conductivity. In the body of this report the authors invoke the high-plasma conductivity approximation and obtain a modified form of the hose equation of motion that includes the wall effects.
