Abstract:
The report presents a description of the design constraints, design requirements, and overall design philosophy guiding the implementation of the Rand Intelligent Terminal Agent RITA. RITA is a set of computer programs residing in a PDP-1145 minicomputer. These programs are capable of acting as a user agent which can perform a variety of tasks, under either direct user control or semiautonomous operation over extended periods of time. The RITA system is designed to be widely applicable as a stand-alone computing resource for local text manipulation, as a limited heuristic modeling tool, and as a front end to remote computing systems and networks. Operational features in the current January 1976 version of RITA are described.
