Stimulated Soft X-Ray Emission in the Range of 40 Angstroms to 140 Angstroms from Laser Excited Media.

The report describes the early phases of a study of processes in a laser produced plasma which it is hoped will lead to the development of a soft x-ray laser. The x-ray spectrum from a plasma of highly ionized aluminum produced by a focussed pulse of light from a large Nd3glass laser was examined. The focussed intensity reaches approximately 10 to the 14th power wattssq cm in the experiments. Estimates of the plasma temperature, density, and degree of ionization are made. These estimates agree well with the results of a computer simulation. Moreover, the computer simulation predicts an emission line spectrum which agrees well in detail with the experimental observations. To date the experimental conditions e.g., laser pulse power, target composition, prepulse timing have not been varied sufficiently to adequately test the computer model. During the present reporting period, the authors have also constructued a special focusing system which will allow them to produce a laser-heated plasma in the form of a narrow line.
