Abstract:
A hybrid analog-digital signal processing method has been developed to investigate the potential of employing nonlinear noise processing to improve the signal-to-noise ratio SN in extremely low-frequency ELF communication systems. Preliminary results suggest that significant improvements in SN can be achieved if careful attention is given to clipping levels for high-amplitude atmospheric noise spikes and notch-filtering man-made interfering signals. Analysis of ELF noise data from Norway and Italy indicate, however, that the achievable improvemnt may be greater under low-noise conditions than under high-noise conditions. Author
