The basic question is whether or not Spain should be admitted to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization upon the demise of Generalisimo Francisco Franco Bahamonde the elevation of Prince Juan Carlos de Borbon as King and the return of the government to its traditional monarchial form. The strategic importance of Spain to the NATO Alliance was examined in context of developments in the United States, Spain, and the NATO environment. The research was conducted solely through unclassified documents available within the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe.
