Abstract:

This work integrates the design and manufacturing processes by interfacing computer graphics to numerical control. It focuses on the transformation of geometric descriptions of three dimensional machine part into procedural descriptions of tooling operations. Three dimensional machine parts are designed with volume building blocks. The blocks are converted into programs. The interaction among the volume building blocks is expressed as the interaction among programs--which results in a cavity description of the machine part. The cavity description is next interpreted based on a volume oriented model of a three-axis drillingmilling machine. Type of cuts and tool paths are generated in the form of numerical control program.
