A Review and Analysis of the Honeywell Collision Avoidance System-Phase II.

The report explores critical problems in the Honeywell CAS in a high density environment such as that projected by the FAA in 1971 for the Los Angeles Basin in 1982 800 aircraft. In the analysis, the Air Transport Association ATA collision avoidance logic was used to evaluate the performance of the Honeywell CAS and the suitability of the ATA logic was not questioned. Where possible, this report attempts to build on IDAs previous analyses however, because of extensive and significant design changes, particularly in the threat evaluation logic, the performance of the Honeywell CAS with regard to detection probability and false alarm probability in a dense environment had to be revised considerably. Honeywell has proposed two levels of equipment for use in collision avoidance the AVOIDS-I and AVOIDS-II. The AVOIDS-I is intended for use by high-performance aircraft and can handle encounters between aircraft with closing speeds up to 2000 ftsec. The threat evaluation logic of the AVOIDS-I is patterned after the ATA logic, but some minor differences exist. The AVOIDS-II equipment is intended for use by low-performance aircraft and is not patterned after the ATA logic.
