Decreases in rat plasma, erythrocyte and brain cholinesterase levels after intraperitoneal injection of 1 to 5 mgkg of 4-benzothienyl-N-methylcarbamate MOBAM, were compared with decrements in spontaneous motor activity and changes in performance of a rapidly acquired conditioned avoidance response produced by this compound. Significant effects were observed with all five measures at dosages producing no obvious clinical signs. A dosage of 2 mgkg significantly depressed plasma and erythrocyte cholinesterase activity and decreased motor activity 15 minutes after injection. Higher dosages 2.5 to 5 mgkg significantly depressed brain cholinesterase activity and avoidance performance.
