Abstract:

This report describes an analytic and experimental investigation for the automatic detection, recognition, and tracking of real targets at night with a Night Observation Device NOD image intensifier connected to a Grumman Optical Matched Filter Image Correlator OMFIC. A preliminary demonstration with a scaled tank model located at some distance in a parking lot was conducted at Grumman and is described. Videotaped tank and truck imagery obtained at Fort Belvoir, Virginia at night and during the day was played through the system and these results are described. The results of this study indicate that it is possible to detect, recognize, and track live targets or objects with the NOD-OMFIC system. Two areas for future investigation are discussed 1 the limitations imposed by large optical memories and 2 improved imagery into the OMFIC.
