Abstract:

The Lindquist Ocean Wave Follower LOWFER is an electro-mechanical device which actively follows the sea surface. Although it measures waves, its primary purpose is to allow turbulence sensors to be placed near the naviface. Results of laboratory and field experiments are presented which demonstrate the degree to which the device can be used in the real environment. LOWFER has a maximum stroke of one meter, a tracking error of less than 7 acceptable frequency response of up to 4 Hz, and is capable of carrying a 0.5 kg payload. A second stage tethered catamaranneutral buoyancy cylinder buoy was constructed and tested in conjunction with LOWFER. When LOWFER is used with the buoy, waves much larger than one meter can be followed. However, serious analysis problems are introduced into turbulence data taken in this manner. Author
