The paper describes the design for a prototype of a computer system that performs legal analysis by determining the extent to which a hypothetical set of facts falls within certain legal doctrines. Human activity and doctrines of law are represented by structural machine models called situations. These are built up from component elements and alternative types, assembled in turn from primitive representations of things and relations, which are categorized hierarchically. Analysis comprises structural decomposition and matching.
