Abstract:

The incorporation into commercial and military fleets of large surface effect ships, operating at cruising speeds in the 60 to 100 knots range, introduces fundamental problems of safety and control which must be solved if the SES is to be operationally viable. From the navigation and anti-collision aspects, this high speed marine environment cannot be likened to that of either the aircraft or conventional ship, but falls between the two, containing some of the disadvantages of both. Studies are reported which consider the navigational problems from first principles and which have arrived at a practical, economic and technically feasible system that will fulfill, to a limited extent, the navigation and collision avoidance requirements.
