Abstract:

A perspective for the consideration of sea-floor work systems is offered. The history of the RUM bottom crawler is briefly reviewed and recent experience with the ORB-RUM seafloor work system is summarized. The 108.5 days spent at sea during 1972 and 1973 are outlined according to activities involved. A single 30 day mission, during which RUM logged 190 hours of bottom time at 1220 m incurring total expenses of 592 per bottom hour, is discussed in some detail.
