Abstract:
During his connection with ONR London as a part-time acoustics consultant, the author, as a matter of personal interest and on his own time, made a study of the noise control effort in France. Government laboratories and agencies concerned with the control of airborne noise, particularly road traffic-generated noise are described. Economic and demographic factors result in urban traffic noise problems that appear more severe than those in the U.S. The major R and D effort is aimed at the confinement of traffic noise generated by throughways in urban areas, by means of tunnels and anti-noise barriers. Current anti-noise legislation provides industry with little incentive to evolve quieter cars. Comments on aircraft and industrial noise are also included in an appendix. Author
