Abstract:

In support of High Altitude Nuclear Explosion HANE phenomenology the NRL Plasma Physics Division has developed theoretical models for many of the important features of the aurora. This report describes the auroral modelong results for the energy deposition of energetic electrons and ions protons in the atmosphere, the effects of the energy deposition on the chemistry of the auroral ionosphere, and the effects of auroral ionization in the electric fields and currents at high latitudes. These model results provide a valuable link between the existing and ongoing auroral measurements and the HANE phenomenology simulations.
