The crystal and molecular structure of 2-ethylbenzimidazole has been determined by three dimensional single-crystal x-ray analysis. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 sub 1c with a 20.7624A, b 8.0951A, c 9.9512A, and beta 100.062A. Least-squares refinement of 696 reflections resulted in a final R factor of 0.072. There are two crystallographically independent molecules in the unit cell. The benzimidazole ring is planar. Molecules are linked together by NH. . . .N hydrogen bonds to form chains parallel to the c axis.
