Abstract:

The objective of this contract was to establish standards for evaluation of the hazard potentials of two types of pollution abatement processes, adsorption and incineration systems, associated with U. S. Army Munitions facilities. Two adsorption systems and two incineration systems were studied. The pollution abatement systems were analyzed. These analyses focus attention on estimating the chance of occurrence of a fire or explosion which results in equipment damage andor personnel injury. Design and operating criteria are recommended for the pollution abatement processes. Normal operations, startupshutdown, emergency shutdown, and maintenance operations which could lead to the undesired fire or explosion were considered. Systems studied were Carbon Adsorption of TNT Pink Water Molecular Sieve Adsorption of HNO3 Tail-Gas Fluidized Bed Incineration of Propellants or Explosives and Incineration of Contaminated Inert Wastes.
