The increased probability of retinal hazards from use of binoculars is small, particularly with respect to the increased magnitude of the collected light. The effect cannot be entirely discounted, however, for there are situations where use of binoculars would induce retinal damage. Practically speaking, if a light source can be safely viewed with the unaided eye, it is likely that it would be equally safe to observe it through binoculars.
