The simple, nonlinear time-dependent advection equation Partial of dudt uPartial of dudx 0 --in which the dependent variable uwhich may be considered a velocity is a function of time t and one space dimension x--is used as a framework for the comparison of a number of computational strategies. Second and fourth order schemes, with differing boundary conditions, are examined and compared with an analytical solution. Among those schemes which can be applied in practice, a fourth-order scheme--in both time and space--is the most desirable from a number of different aspects.
