The design, construction and testing details of a liquid crystal fiberoptic temperature probe are described. A liquid crystal sensor is attached to the distal tip of a fiberoptic probe. Pulsed light from a red LED illuminates the liquid crystal sensor through the fiberoptics and reflected red light which is strongly temperature dependent is collected. An electronic system provides all the necessary electro-optic components for the unit, including a temperature readout. Probe response data shows sensitivity, stability, hysteresis and reproducibility. A modification of the liquid crystal sensor using a thin coating of resistive material attached to the sensor tip is described by measuring electric field strength in tissues.
