Abstract:

The work reported consisted of using an instrumented van to record wave environment data on seven selected representative sites in the Eastern United States. The data acquisition and analysis results are to be applied to establishing a better data base for the environments with which recreational boats and operators must or do contend. The report provides significant inland lake, large bay and near off-shore wave data analysis. In addition, an attempt was made to document the type size boats recreational boating activity which occurred in the different wave environments. The correlation of boat activity types to a particularly limiting environment was only reasonably successful. No sharp cut-off point environment was found which limits the use of johnboats vs. runabouts, or runabouts vs. cruisers, etc. However, environments are reported which tended to limit all, or nearly all, activity of any kind.
