Experimental data was analysed on the influence of a 700 W carbon dioxide laser beam on iron and its alloys in an oxidizing medium. The formation of a thick oxide film produced as a result of heating was analysed. The hydrodynamic phenomena and the mass transfer in the zone exposed to the action of the beam were investigated. It was found that the destruction of the metals by the laser beam in air can be described by conventional heating theory, taking into account the specific characteristics of the thermochemical oxidizing reactions.
